This cozy bourbon apple cider cocktail with cloves comes together in about five minutes, uses simple ingredients, and tastes like autumn in a mug. It’s the perfect warm drink for crisp evenings and fall gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 oz (60 ml) bourbon (recommended: Buffalo Trace or Maker’s Mark)
  • 4 oz (120 ml) unfiltered apple cider
  • 34 whole cloves
  • 1 cinnamon stick (optional but recommended)
  • 1 teaspoon maple syrup or honey (optional, for sweetness)
  • Orange peel or apple slice (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Heat the Apple Cider (2 minutes): Pour 4 oz (120 ml) of apple cider into a small saucepan. Add 3-4 whole cloves and one cinnamon stick. Warm over medium heat for 2-3 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the cider is steaming but not boiling.
  2. Let the Spices Infuse (1-2 minutes): Remove the saucepan from heat and let it sit for 1-2 minutes to allow the cloves and cinnamon to steep into the cider.
  3. Strain the Cider (30 seconds): Pour the warm cider through a fine-mesh strainer into a mug to catch the cloves and cinnamon stick. If desired, reserve the cinnamon stick for garnish.
  4. Add the Bourbon (10 seconds): Pour 2 oz (60 ml) of bourbon into the warm cider. Stir gently to combine.
  5. Taste and Adjust (30 seconds): Taste and add 1 teaspoon of maple syrup or honey if desired. Adjust spices or bourbon to preference.
  6. Garnish and Serve (30 seconds): Garnish with a thin slice of apple with cloves stuck into the peel, or a strip of orange peel. Serve immediately while warm.

Notes

Don’t boil the cider; keep it at a gentle simmer. Toast spices in the dry saucepan for 20 seconds before adding cider for deeper flavor. Use room temperature bourbon to avoid cooling the drink. For a crowd, batch in a slow cooker on low. Whole cloves are potent; start with 3-4 per serving.
