A warm, gooey fall dessert combining the nutty flavor of brown butter, cinnamon roll dough, and pumpkin puree for a comforting and easy-to-make treat.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1/2 cup (113 g) unsalted butter, browned
  • 1 can (15 oz / 425 g) pure pumpkin puree (not pumpkin pie filling)
  • 1 package (about 12 oz / 340 g) refrigerated cinnamon roll dough
  • 1/2 cup (100 g) granulated sugar
  • 1/3 cup (67 g) packed brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup (60 g) chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)

Instructions

  1. Brown the Butter: In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt 1/2 cup unsalted butter. Stir gently as it foams and browns around the edges, about 5 to 7 minutes. Once browned, pour into a heatproof bowl and let cool slightly.
  2. Mix Pumpkin Base: In a separate bowl, combine pumpkin puree, granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla extract, and salt. Stir until smooth and well blended.
  3. Prepare the Cinnamon Rolls: Open the cinnamon roll dough package and slice the rolls into halves or quarters for bite-sized pieces.
  4. Assemble the Dump Cake: Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish. Pour the pumpkin mixture evenly into the dish. Scatter the cinnamon roll pieces over the pumpkin layer. Drizzle the browned butter evenly over the top.
  5. Add Nuts: Sprinkle chopped pecans or walnuts over the top if using.
  6. Bake: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake for 35-40 minutes or until the top is golden and bubbly and the cinnamon roll pieces are cooked through. A toothpick inserted in the pumpkin layer should come out mostly clean.
  7. Cool & Serve: Let the cake cool for 10-15 minutes before serving. Serve warm, optionally with vanilla ice cream or maple syrup.

Notes

Brown the butter carefully to avoid burning. Use room temperature ingredients for smooth mixing. Slice cinnamon roll dough while cold for cleaner cuts. Watch baking time closely to avoid dryness. Rewarm brown butter if it solidifies before baking. Variations include gluten-free dough, vegan butter, and adding spices or chocolate chips.
