A comforting and easy-to-make apple crumble featuring tart apples, a crunchy oat streusel topping, and a salted caramel drizzle that balances sweetness with a touch of salt.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 cups apples, peeled and sliced (Granny Smith preferred, Honeycrisp works well too)
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
  • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 1/2 cup caramel sauce (store-bought or homemade)
  • Flaky sea salt, for sprinkling

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish lightly with butter or non-stick spray.
  2. In a large bowl, toss the peeled and sliced apples with lemon juice.
  3. Add granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, flour, and a pinch of salt to the apples. Stir until evenly coated.
  4. Transfer the apple mixture to the prepared baking dish, spreading it out evenly.
  5. In a medium bowl, combine rolled oats, flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Toss to blend.
  6. Cut the cold butter into the topping mixture using a pastry cutter, fork, or fingers until pea-sized crumbs form.
  7. Sprinkle the oat streusel evenly over the apples in the baking dish without pressing down.
  8. Bake for 40 to 45 minutes until juices bubble around the edges and topping is golden brown. Tent with foil if topping browns too quickly.
  9. Remove from oven and drizzle with salted caramel sauce while still warm. Sprinkle lightly with flaky sea salt.
  10. Let the crumble cool slightly before serving.

Notes

Keep butter cold when making the streusel topping for a crumbly texture. Tent with foil if topping browns too quickly. Use a mix of tart and sweet apples for best flavor. Salted caramel drizzle and flaky sea salt enhance the flavor balance. Can be made gluten-free by using gluten-free flour blends and checking caramel sauce ingredients. Dairy-free versions possible with coconut oil instead of butter.
