A quick and refreshing homemade lemonade recipe with a perfect balance of tartness and sweetness, ideal for hot days and any occasion.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 medium-sized fresh lemons (to yield about 1 cup / 240 ml lemon juice)
  • 1 cup (200 grams) granulated sugar
  • 5 cups (1.2 liters) water, divided (1 cup hot water for syrup, 4 cups cold water for diluting)
  • Ice cubes, as needed
  • Optional: Fresh mint leaves for garnish
  • Optional: Lemon slices for garnish

Instructions

  1. Make the simple syrup: Combine 1 cup (240 ml) of water and 1 cup (200 grams) of granulated sugar in a medium saucepan. Heat over medium, stirring occasionally until the sugar fully dissolves. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
  2. Juice the lemons: Cut the lemons in half and juice them using a citrus juicer. Strain the juice through a fine mesh strainer to remove seeds and excess pulp, aiming for about 1 cup (240 ml) of juice.
  3. Mix the lemonade: In a large pitcher, combine the freshly squeezed lemon juice and the cooled simple syrup. Stir well to blend the flavors.
  4. Add cold water and ice: Pour in 4 cups (950 ml) of cold water and stir again. Taste and adjust sweetness or tartness by adding more water or lemon juice if needed. Add ice cubes to chill immediately.
  5. Garnish and serve: Add fresh mint leaves and lemon slices for garnish. Serve in chilled glasses and enjoy right away.

Notes

Use room temperature lemons for more juice. Dissolve sugar in hot water to avoid gritty texture. Strain juice twice if you prefer no pulp. Adjust sweetness and tartness to taste. For a fizzy version, replace cold water with sparkling water. Store lemonade in the fridge up to 2 days and stir before serving.
