Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 oz (225g) thinly sliced high-quality smoked salmon
  • 1 medium cucumber, thinly sliced
  • 1 cup (150g) cherry tomatoes, halved or whole
  • 8 oz (225g) full-fat plain cream cheese
  • 4 oz (115g) goat cheese or Brie (optional)
  • 2 large bagels, sliced and lightly toasted
  • 1 box (about 150g) artisan crackers (plain water crackers and seeded varieties)
  • Small bunch fresh dill
  • 2 tablespoons capers
  • 1 lemon, cut into wedges
  • ½ small red onion, thinly sliced (optional)
  • 1 ripe avocado, sliced (optional)
  • 2 large hard boiled eggs, peeled and halved (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare your fresh ingredients (10 minutes): Rinse and dry cucumber and cherry tomatoes. Slice cucumbers into thin rounds and halve cherry tomatoes. Slice avocado just before assembling to avoid browning. Thinly slice red onion if using.
  2. Get your breads ready (5 minutes): Slice bagels in half and toast lightly. Arrange artisan crackers nearby, accessible but not overcrowded.
  3. Arrange the spreads and garnishes (5 minutes): Spoon cream cheese into a small bowl. Add capers in another ramekin. Cut lemon into wedges and arrange on the board. Place goat cheese or Brie on the board if using.
  4. Layer the smoked salmon (3 minutes): Gently fan out smoked salmon slices on the board, leaving space for other elements. Use thin layers for elegance and easy grabbing.
  5. Fill in with veggies and extras (5 minutes): Scatter cucumber slices, cherry tomatoes, and red onion slices around the salmon. Add avocado slices and hard boiled egg halves if using. Sprinkle fresh dill generously over salmon and cream cheese bowls.
  6. Final touches (2 minutes): Place spreaders and tongs nearby. Add a few sprigs of fresh herbs for color and freshness. Optionally drizzle a tiny bit of olive oil over avocado or tomatoes for shine and flavor.

Notes

Take cream cheese out of the fridge 15 minutes before serving to soften. Use thinly sliced smoked salmon for best texture. Keep lemon wedges and avocado separate until serving to prevent browning. Avoid overcrowding the board for a high-end look. Fresh bagels and crackers are essential for best taste. Optional additions include olives, radishes, or flavored cream cheeses.
