  • 8 all-beef hot dogs (Oscar Mayer or Hebrew National recommended)
  • 8 classic soft hot dog buns (white, whole wheat, or brioche)
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened (for toasting buns)
  • 1/4 cup yellow mustard
  • 1/4 cup ketchup (optional)
  • 1/4 cup sweet pickle relish
  • 1/2 cup finely chopped raw onions
  • 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar or favorite melting cheese (optional)
  • Optional toppings: sliced jalapeños, coleslaw, bacon bits, pickled jalapeños or banana peppers

Instructions

  1. Preheat the grill to medium-high heat, about 400°F (204°C), for 10-15 minutes.
  2. Spread softened butter on the inside of each bun to prepare for toasting.
  3. Place hot dogs on the grill perpendicular to the grates to get sear marks. Grill for 5-7 minutes, turning every 2 minutes for even char. Avoid burning and watch for flare-ups.
  4. Just before hot dogs are done, place buns butter-side down on the grill for 1-2 minutes until golden and crisp.
  5. Transfer hot dogs to buns and add mustard, ketchup, relish, onions, and cheese if using. For melted cheese, place assembled hot dogs back on the grill for 30 seconds with the lid closed.
  6. Add any extra toppings like jalapeños, coleslaw, or bacon bits as desired.
  7. Serve immediately while hot dogs are juicy and buns are warm.

Notes

Do not pierce hot dogs to keep them juicy. Oil grill grates lightly before heating to prevent sticking. Bring hot dogs to room temperature before grilling for even cooking. Toast buns with butter for a crispy texture and to prevent sogginess. Watch flare-ups carefully and move hot dogs to cooler grill areas if needed.
