A quick and easy sloppy joes recipe that delivers classic, saucy, and satisfying flavor in just 20 minutes, perfect for busy weeknights or casual meals.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground beef (80/20 lean-to-fat ratio)
  • 1 medium yellow onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 3/4 cup ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon yellow mustard
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 46 hamburger buns, soft and slightly toasted

Instructions

  1. Heat your skillet over medium-high heat (about 375°F / 190°C). Add the ground beef and break it up with your spatula. Cook for 5-7 minutes until browned and no longer pink, stirring occasionally to prevent clumps.
  2. Drain excess fat if needed, especially if your beef is on the fattier side.
  3. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic to the skillet with the beef. Cook for 3-4 minutes until the onions soften and become translucent, stirring frequently so the garlic doesn’t burn.
  4. Stir in ketchup, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, and mustard. Mix everything thoroughly to combine.
  5. Reduce heat to medium-low and simmer the mixture for 5-8 minutes. Stir occasionally, allowing the flavors to meld and the sauce to thicken slightly.
  6. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Give it a final stir and turn off the heat.
  7. Toast your hamburger buns lightly in a toaster or under the broiler until golden.
  8. Spoon the sloppy joe mixture generously onto the buns. Serve immediately.

Notes

If the sauce is too thick, add a splash of water or broth and stir. If too thin, simmer uncovered a bit longer to reduce. Toast buns just before serving to prevent sogginess. For a leaner option, use ground turkey or chicken. Vegetarian versions can use lentils or mushrooms with plant-based Worcestershire sauce and ketchup.
