A bright and bold margarita combining the juicy sweetness of watermelon with the spicy kick of jalapeño, perfect for summer evenings and casual get-togethers.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 cups (450 grams) fresh watermelon, cubed
  • 1 small jalapeño pepper, sliced (remove seeds for less heat)
  • 2 ounces (60 ml) silver tequila
  • 1 ounce (30 ml) fresh lime juice (about 1 large lime)
  • 1 tablespoon (15 ml) agave syrup
  • Ice cubes
  • Coarse salt or Tajín for rimming the glass (optional)

Instructions

  1. Place the fresh watermelon cubes and sliced jalapeño (start with half the pepper if you want it milder) into your blender. Pulse until smooth but not too watery, about 30 seconds. If it seems too thick, add a tablespoon of water. Taste the puree carefully; if it’s too spicy, add more watermelon.
  2. Squeeze fresh lime juice until you have about 1 ounce (30 ml).
  3. Rub a lime wedge around the rim of your glass and dip it into coarse salt or Tajín for extra flavor and flair (optional).
  4. Fill your cocktail shaker halfway with ice. Add 2 ounces (60 ml) of silver tequila, 1 ounce (30 ml) of lime juice, 1 tablespoon (15 ml) of agave syrup, and 3 ounces (90 ml) of your watermelon jalapeño puree.
  5. Secure the lid and shake for about 15 seconds until the outside of the shaker feels cold.
  6. Fill your rimmed glass with fresh ice cubes. Strain the margarita mixture over the ice. For a pulpy texture, pour straight without straining.
  7. Garnish with a thin slice of jalapeño or a small wedge of watermelon on the rim. Serve and enjoy.

Notes

Start with half a jalapeño and adjust to taste to control heat. Use fresh lime juice for best flavor. Chill glass and shaker for a crisper margarita. Shake vigorously with ice to aerate and blend flavors. Agave syrup can be substituted with simple syrup or honey. For a smoky twist, replace some tequila with mezcal. The puree can be made ahead and refrigerated up to 24 hours.
