This spooky blood orange Halloween sangria is a quick and easy party punch that looks dramatic and sinister but tastes sweet and bright. Made with simple ingredients like dry red wine, brandy, fresh blood orange juice, and seasonal fruit, it’s the perfect festive drink for any fall gathering.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 bottle dry red wine (750 ml), such as Tempranillo or Merlot
  • 1/2 cup brandy or orange liqueur (like Cointreau)
  • 1/4 cup maple syrup or honey
  • 1 cup fresh blood orange juice (about 34 blood oranges)
  • 1/2 cup cold water or sparkling water
  • 2 blood oranges, thinly sliced
  • 1 apple (Honeycrisp or Fuji), thinly sliced
  • 1/2 cup pomegranate seeds (optional)
  • 1 cinnamon stick or 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • Fresh rosemary sprigs for garnish

Instructions

  1. Juice the blood oranges: Roll the blood oranges on the counter to loosen the juice. Cut them in half and juice them using a citrus juicer or by hand. You need about 1 cup of fresh juice. Set the juice aside. Save one or two of the juiced halves for slicing later if you want extra fruit in the pitcher.
  2. Slice the fruit: Using a sharp knife, slice the remaining blood oranges into thin rounds (about 1/4 inch thick). Slice the apple into thin rounds or half-moons, removing the core. If using pomegranate seeds, remove them from the pomegranate now. Place all the fruit in the bottom of your large pitcher.
  3. Combine the liquids: Pour the bottle of red wine into the pitcher over the fruit. Add the brandy, fresh blood orange juice, and maple syrup. Stir gently with a wooden spoon until the maple syrup dissolves. The color should be a deep, dark ruby red.
  4. Add the aromatics: Drop in the cinnamon stick and a few sprigs of fresh rosemary. Give everything one more gentle stir.
  5. Chill and infuse: Cover the pitcher with plastic wrap or a lid and place it in the refrigerator. The sangria needs time for the flavors to meld and the fruit to infuse the wine. Chill for at least 2 hours, but 4-6 hours is best.
  6. Serve: When ready to serve, give the sangria a final stir. Fill wine glasses or mason jars with ice cubes (optional). Pour the sangria over the ice, making sure to include some of the fruit slices in each glass. Garnish with a fresh rosemary sprig or a few pomegranate seeds if you like.

Notes

Do not skip the chilling time; the magic happens after a few hours in the fridge. Use a dry red wine to avoid cloying sweetness. Slice fruit thinly for better infusion. If making more than 6 hours ahead, add rosemary just before serving to prevent it from becoming overpowering. For an extra eerie look, add a few drops of black food coloring. Remove fruit slices after 24 hours to prevent bitterness from citrus rinds.
