These spooky witch finger pretzels are a fun and easy Halloween snack made with pretzel rods, green candy melts, and sliced almonds for fingernails. Perfect for parties, they come together in about 25 minutes and are sure to delight kids and adults alike.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 bag (12 ounces) pretzel rods
  • 1 bag (12 ounces) green candy melts
  • 1/2 cup sliced almonds (raw, unsalted)
  • Green gel food coloring (optional)
  • Red gel icing or red decorating gel (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons red candy melts or red melting wafers (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon coconut oil (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prep your workstation: Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone mat. Arrange pretzel rods in a single layer with about an inch of space between each.
  2. Melt the green candy melts: Place in a microwave-safe bowl and microwave in 30-second intervals at 50% power, stirring after each, until smooth (about 2-2.5 minutes). If too thick, add 1 teaspoon coconut oil or vegetable shortening.
  3. Coat the pretzel rods: Dip each pretzel rod into the melted green coating, leaving about an inch at the bottom uncoated. Use an offset spatula or butter knife to spread evenly. Let excess drip off, then place on the prepared baking sheet.
  4. Add the fingernail: While coating is still wet, use tweezers to press a sliced almond onto the tip of the pretzel, pointed end outward, overlapping by about 1/4 inch. Press lightly to adhere.
  5. Create knuckle wrinkles: Use a toothpick or the tip of a spatula to gently drag 2-3 lines across the coated pretzel to form knuckle wrinkles. Do not press too hard.
  6. Chill to set: Place the baking sheet in the refrigerator for 10-15 minutes, or until the coating is firm. For a quicker set, freeze for 5 minutes but watch carefully to avoid cracking.
  7. Add the ‘blood’ detail (optional): Melt red candy melts in a microwave-safe bowl in 20-second intervals at 50% power. Transfer to a small piping bag or zip-top bag with a tiny corner snipped off. Pipe a small dab of red at the base of each almond ‘fingernail’ and optionally a thin line down the side of the pretzel. Let set at room temperature for 5 minutes or refrigerate for 2-3 minutes.
  8. Final touch (optional): Add tiny dots of red gel icing along the knuckle lines for extra gruesome effect.

Notes

Work quickly when adding almonds as the coating sets fast. For best results, chill the pretzels immediately after adding almonds. The red ‘blood’ detail is optional but adds to the creepy effect. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days. For a nut-free version, use dried banana chips or candy corn instead of almonds.
